Nightmare start for Kaya FC-Iloilo as BG Pathum United run riot

The first match in the AFC Champions League for Kaya FC-Iloilo is in the books but it was not the start they were looking for as BG Pathum United displayed a masterclass against the Filipino as they won four goals to nil.

Fresh from their historic win against Shanghai Port FC, Kaya FC-Iloilo looked to carry on the momentum they had from that match into their face-off against the Thai League champions but they knew that it was always going to be tough.

The 2018 Copa Paulino Alcantara winners saw some good promise in the first 15 minutes of the match. On the 17th minute, Jovin Bedic looked to push on the counter but Daizo Horikoshi's pass was too strong for him to chase.

It only took BG Pathum United 23 minutes to score the opener but they still needed to work for it. Teerasil Dangda got his name on the scoresheet after scoring off a rebound. Audie Menzi, the goalscorer, saved the ball with his face but the Simone Rota and Louie Casas' miscommunication cost them the first goal.

The Thai League champions picked up the second goal on the 35th minute after Thitipan Puangchan gave a tasty incisive pass to the path of Diogo who did everything right to evade the defenders and round Casas to finish the play.

The Filipino debutants had a shot on goal through team captain Jovin Bedic two minutes into the injury time but his effort was a tad ambitious as he took it from way outside of the box only for the keeper to easily grasp it.

In the second half, BG Pathum United shifted to second gear and put on enormous pressure on Kaya FC's defense. So much pressure that Rota gave in and had a late tackle on Diogo which gave the referee enough reason to send him packing.

Shortly after, Diogo scored a majestic free-kick as he curled it past the wall and into the back of the net with Casas having no chance of saving it. At this moment, the Thai League champs are simply cruising past the Ilonggo-based booters.

It was on the 59th minute that the final nail in the coffin was banged in by Dangda after Diogo assisted him. Diogo found a huge amount of space down the right side then crossed the ball to Teerasil who headed it in past Casas.

The Filipinos left everything on the pitch and in return come the consolation goal in the 82nd minute. A quick one-two passing inside the box saw Kenshiro Daniels laying it off for Marwin Angeles to finish with his left-footed curler past Chatchai Budprom and score the club and the country's first-ever goal in the Champions League.

Kaya FC will now have to regroup and face the champions of Vietnam, Viettel FC on the 29th of June at the Pathum Thani Stadium.
