BREAKING: Kaya FC to face Shanghai SIPG as Brisbane Roar begs off from the AFC Champions League
A piece of welcoming news for Kaya FC-Iloilo as the Asian Football Confederation announced that Australian clubs Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC, and Melbourne City FC withdrew from the AFC Champions League.
In a statement released by the-afc.com, they've taken note of Football Australia's confirmation of the withdrawals from Sydney FC, Melbourne City FC and Brisbane Roar from the ACL preliminary stages and group stages respectively.
This means that Kaya FC will now be facing Shanghai SIPG in their AFC Champions League playoffs to determine their fate if they will progress to the group stages where the pool of champions await them.
In group F, they have the chance to face Thai League champions BG Pathum United, K-League title holders Ulsan Hyundai, and V-League winners Viettel FC.
As of press time, it has yet to be confirmed the reason of the withdrawal of the Aussie clubs from the competition but reports say that it is because of the imposed travel restrictions that prevent them from leaving the country.
